“My name is Antyom… I was born In Moscow…. me 40 thousand others feared the future… will we live to see another day? Will our rations dry up … Will Metro 2033 come out before I pass away?”
Well you’re in luck fella cause it’s here finally on the sweet year of 2010 18th of march and your story will be told. Because this game was made not too long ago by the all known Publisher THQ and Developer 4A Games there is some expectations on this game and the game practically delivers on almost everything without trouble but there is some small minor things wrong with it.
The story pretty much runs like this… In Moscow Antyom and 40 thousand other people are survivors of a nuclear war above the surface, the land has become so damaged from it no NORMAL form of life can live above the surface so the survivors took shelter in the Moscow Metro stations which has been there home for 20 years. Eventually though a good friend known as Hunter returns from exploring the outside world and both of you find out that there is a new threat on the loose, Hunter asks you “If I don’t make it back it is up to you to make it to Polis station, Don’t let me down.” And from here the story starts to unfold but I won’t say anymore in risk of saying spoilers.
The type of Genre this game definitely fits into is a Horror FPS sort of like Bioshock. I played most of the game with the lights off because that’s how this type of game works. A lot of this game is played in dark dank places too so this helps set the mood as well (I did find the small cramped places annoying from time to time but meh it won’t ruin the experience). I also played it on hard and well it can be VERY hard sometimes or pretty half half from time to time. The main thing you will be doing is Killing Mutants and enemy soldiers but you will also find yourself scrounging for Ammo, Air Cans to be able to walk round the surface, guns even throwing knifes! The game also has different ways of playing too, you can either go in guns blazing or just take your time killing them off bit by bit. This is probably not a game you could just pick up and play, I was very confused and died because of really silly things like forgetting which button does what, but don’t worry you just need a little practice and yes you will be able to just pop it in and play whenever you want with no trouble.
The way the game looks stands out from normal games, you are usually shrouded by darkness so everything is very dark and creepy but now and again when you can see things in the light it looks pretty decent. Even when you are damaged or your Gasmask is cracked it looks awesome. The way they can make things look all realistic in the light and dark makes it pretty good in the graphics area. I have seen this done before but I think Metro does it the best. There isn’t really that much music in the actual game, you may walk past some stereo players which play quiet but catchy music and you may sometimes here some stuff creep in but not all of the time, this is understandable because if there is music playing it is harder to make it more realistic and therefore harder to scare you. However it makes up for this for having some really nice menu and ending music, it’s so good I want the songs on my mobile no joke. The actual sounds though are pretty good it scares and makes me jump now and again when I hear bullets flying or some ugly mutants munching on me.
here were a few key features lacking in this game. For one there is no multiplayer but it is acceptable given the type of game it is. You also can’t hold many weapons so you will be trying to figure out which to drop and which to keep, that said this does help set the mood for a realistic game. From Many weapons come many ammo types and this game sorta confused me with this but I learned eventually. One nice feature is that the guns you have are made from scraps. I know that sounds like they suck but they don’t they are just as effective as any other gun if not sometimes better. With some mutants they will tackle you to the floor but luckily this game has a feature where you can get out of being eaten if your quick enough, which was very useful. The load times are no longer a bother in this game because they are quite fast on the 360 and you are even treated to some interesting diary entries and if you don’t like reading don’t worry they are read to you.
I have talked for soooo long about this game and I could still go on but you’ll just have to play it to find that out. I would really recommend this to people who love games like DOOM and Bioshock and if that don’t convince you perhaps my score will. I thought it was a great game and think it will certainly be remembered in the year 2033.
